Study on Tooth Contact of Gear Couplings

Abstract: Gear couplings are widely used as connecting elements that can allow axis displacements caused between two axes in compact size. The recent demands to gear couplings are as follows, they are increase in load capacity, increase in allowable shaft angle and reduction in vibration and noise. So far, many studies have been conducted on relations of shapes of tooth surfaces, axis displacements, number of tooth pairs in contact, etc. However, there is no research that has analyzed tooth contact of gear couplings usi… Show more

“…The test results show that temperature rises, vibration and noise increase, and both tooth ends are seriously worn in a short time when misalignment angle reaches the maximum. Ohshima et al (2012) presented a new hub tooth surface interpolated from many section parabolic profiles to bring good tooth contact for gear couplings, and verified by the meshing test of the crown gear coupling. However, the test principle and device were not given.…”

“…Alfares et al, 16 Lei et al 17 optimized the design of key parameters such as the displacement circle radius, clearance and number of teeth of the gear couplings in order to improve the performance of the hub tooth. To meet the large misalignment design of the gear coupling, Ohshima 18 gave a new tooth profile with good contact and machined gear couplings capable of the meeting misalignment angle attention, 19 In˜urritegui et al 20,21 investigated spherical couplings capable of achieving isometric height misalignment angle (3°-10°) transmissions and gave design guidelines for the basic parameters of highly crowned spherical gear coupling. However, relatively little research has been done on how to effectively improve the load-carrying capacity and wear performance through the design of hub tooth.…”

“…For this reason, an analytical generation model that takes into account the thread surface of the hob during generation has recently been developed [3] and experimentally validated [4]. This model has advantages over other published models [5,6], because it is able to generate tooth surfaces with a large amount of crowning and to produce undercut sections. Moreover, none of the models present in the literature were experimentally validated, as is the case of the proposed model [4].…”

“…The gear couplings must have a specific amount of backlash to avoid interference and, at the same time, enable the angular misalignment [6][7][8][9]. Angular clearance is the angle of rotation that exists when rotating the teeth on the hub while keeping the sleeve stationary, i.e.…”
