The existing heat pipe applied to a LED headlamp has a large size although it has only small area of contact. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve a harmonious radiation of heat along with the difficulty in attaching the LED due to its large volume. This study proposed a plate heat pipe to solve the aforementioned problems. Through the study, the effects of the thickness and acetone filling rate on the heat radiation effects of a plate heat pipe at room temperature and vehicle driving environment were confirmed along with comparison with the heat radiation effects of the existing copper heat pipe. The heat radiation effects were checked by attaching a thermocouple to the evaporator, adiabatic section and condenser of the LED. As the results of the experiment, it was found that a temperature below 120oC, which is the allowable temperature to guarantee the performance of the LED, is maintained. In addition, as the results of comparison of radiation of heat, it was confirmed that the plate heat pipe with a thickness of 2 mm and 20% filled with acetone has a better performance than the existing copper heat pipe.

LED lighting,considered to be a new growth industry, has attracted a great deal of attention due to its higher illumination and longer life time than existing light sources. In this study, high-efficiency and long-life LED fog lamps for automobiles were developed, which can substitute the existing 27 W halogen fog lamps for a used car market. For this purpose, the number of LED modules, the body, heat sink, and the output of the fog lamp were first optimized through a numerical analysis. Then, a 10 W-class LED fog lamp was prototyped based on the optimized numerical model, and the performance of the fog lamp was successfully verified through the experiments.

With the advantages of power savings, increased life expectancy and fast response time over traditional incandescent bulb, LEDs are increasingly used for many applications including automotive, aviation, display, and special lighting applications. Since the high heat generation of LED chips can reduce service life, degrade luminous efficiency, and cause variation of color temperature, many studies have been carried out on the optimization of LED packaging and heat sinks. In this study, a fin expansion type cooling device using heat pipe, instead of a solid aluminum heat sink, was designed for LED security lightings based on thermal resistance analysis. Numerical analysis and experimental validation were carried out to evaluate its cooling performance.
