Study on the vertical bearing performance of pile across cave and sensitivity of three parameters

Abstract: A new method was used to study the performance of pile across cave. This paper investigated the vertical bearing characteristics of piles cross caves using centrifugal model tests and a theoretical model of sensitivity. Twelve pile scenarios were selected, the first was a conventional pile, 24 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter, with no karst cave as a control. In the other eleven scenarios the piles passed through karst caves of four different heights, of four different spans, and three different numbers of caves… Show more

“…The cave under pile causes the lack of bearing layer at the pile bottom, which poses a threat to piles [2][3][4][5] .The bearing performance of bridge pile foundations in karst area has attracted much attention of scholars. Feng, Chen and He successfully predicted the bearing strength and stability of piles that constructed on karst cave based on the high accuracy grey model [6][7][8][9] . Wong and Dong implemented the load-settlement law and calculation method of bearing capacity and safe thickness in karst areas using a static load test and theoretical deduction 10,11 .…”

“…Various foundations are considered depending on the type of construction. Shallow foundations are chosen over deep foundations if the soil carrying capacity is adequate for the weight of the structure 16 , 17 . When the soil carrying capacity is insufficient to support the load of the structure, a deep foundation or a mix of the two is used.…”

“…Mei et al designed and proposed a new type of cast-in-place pile to address the problem that piles cannot be formed in the Karst region due to cavities [17]. Increasing the height, span, and number of caves harmed the bearing capacity of pile foundations, according to research by Chen et al on pile foundations through caves [18]. Gotman N Z et al proposed a method to calculate the numerical variation of shear stresses on the lateral surface of piles at various stages of loading by analyzing the extra loads placed on the piles during the formation of cavities [19].…”
