The aesthetic of architecture changes with the history, and its evolution is a dynamic, humane and regional process. The contemporary China is in the double transition periods of traditional and modern, modern and postmodern, therefore the value of architecture lost its order caused by the overlapping and conflicting of different values in different periods, either external “image” or intrinsic “meaning”, are in a state of disorder. With the advent of modernization, traditional architecture seems to be gradually forgotten and abandoned. However, many traditional villages still circulate the environmental wisdom that contemporary architects still use in their designs. Most of the traditional houses all over the world use local building material, make full use of renewable energy, using the natural energy of natural climate actively such as light, heat, wind to adapt to the climate environment, with good adaptability to the local climate, topography and, is a model of passive building technology. This article attempts from Three angles to explore, which are the diagram and theory, simulation software, and environment measurement of Chinese traditional village. Through the above research, we try to find the coupling between traditional local-style dwelling houses and modern residence in the design.

Numerical assessment of night ventilation impact on the thermal comfort of vernacular buildings

Night ventilation, is one of the most effective passive cooling techniques that may contribute to the improvement of the occupants thermal comfort conditions. Despite the justified effectiveness of night ventilation, few studies quantified its influence on the thermal comfort of vernacular buildings, especially under warm dominant climates. The aim of this study is the investigation of the impact of night ventilation on the thermal comfort of vernacular buildings under summer dominant environmental conditions. The subjects under investigation was one traditional buildings in the city of Nicosia in Cyprus. In terms of this study numerical analysis regarding the thermal comfort of the investigated buildings was performed by employing Energy Plus and the flow solver of Design Builder. The indoor operative temperature distribution, the indoor air velocity and a thermal comfort related index were identified in selected thermal zones of the examined building using night ventilation. The results of this study quantified the potential temperature decrease that can result on vernacular buildings due to the use of night ventilation and revealed some restrictions with regard to the allowed percentage of the opening sizes towards achieving optimal thermal conditions in space. This study aspires to provide useful insight regarding the importance of humans' behavior in terms of enabling night ventilation to vernacular buildings, as well as to con-tribute to the ongoing scientific discussion on this subject.

The paper presents a comparative study of the climate responsive design strategies and indoor thermal performance of three vernacular houses in Guanshan Township of eastern Taiwan by building survey and instrument measurements. These houses are all about 80 years old. They are of Chinese style, Japanese style, and a mixture of both styles. All three houses are popular building types in the region. Key findings include: (1) Space buffer, thermal insulation, ground exposure, and natural ventilation are the key elements of climate responsive design strategies. (2) The climate responsive design strategies of the three buildings, while using similar building material, are not the same. They are strongly associated with the buildings’ cultural roots as well as the buildings’ use patterns. (3) The Chinese-style house is a heat rejecter. It is comfortable in spring and summer. The mixed-style house is a heat keeper. It is comfortable in winter and spring. The Japanese-style house is well-ventilated and has equal thermal comfort level at around 50% in all seasons. It is uncommon that vernacular buildings from different cultural traditions coexist in the same region. This study provides detail appraisals of their respective sustainable design strategies in hot and humid climate.
