Study on the Solvent Power of a New Green Solvent:  Biodiesel

Abstract: Refined methyl, ethyl, propyl, 1-butyl, and 2-butyl biodiesels as well as unrefined methyl biodiesels containing glycerides were prepared, and their solvent power was evaluated by measuring the kauri-butanol value. By analysis of the kauri-butanol values of biodiesels with different fatty acid profiles and different alcohol types, some interesting results were obtained. The pure methyl esters have larger kauri-butanol values than those containing glycerides. The unsaturated fatty acid esters have larger kauri-… Show more

“…Biodiesel, a liquid fuel consisting of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, can be used as a substitute for diesel fuel [1], [2]. Some of the advantages of using biodiesel fuel are its renewability, easy biodegradability, non-toxicity and safer handling due to its higher flash point compared to those of fossil fuels [3].…”

“…While the use of higher (e.g. C 4 ) alcohols is also possible [23], and advantageous in respect of producing a less polar and corrosive FAME [24] with reduced cloud and pour points [25], the current high cost of longer chain alcohols, and difficulties associated with separating the heavier FAME product from unreacted alcohol and glycerol, remain problematic.…”
