Study on the Process and Mechanism of Rolling-Bonding between Magnesium and Aluminum

Abstract: Application of magnesium alloy is restricted by its bad formability and low corrosion resistance. In order to resolve these problems, rolling-bonding has been tried as a new method. Pre-heating, rolling and annealing were used in the process of bonding, and aluminum cladding magnesium alloys obtained. The effects of many parameters in the processes of pre-heating, rolling and heat-treatment on bonding strength have been analyzed, and the mechanism of rolling-bonding been studied. It was found that intermediate… Show more

“…Nevertheless, some studies concluded that, the inter-metallic phases do not weaken the bonding strength when the thickness of this layer does not exceed a critical thickness [9]. Compared to the other dissimilar roll bonded metals, few studies were conducted to investigate the influence of heat treatment on the roll bonded Al/Mg material properties [10,11]. Focussing primarily on the mechanical properties of heat treated Al/Mg roll bonded material, the bonding strength was not studies [10][11].…”

Thus, little is known about the mechanism of the inter-metallic layers generation as well as a systematic analysis of the effects of annealing parameters on improving overall bonding strength, mechanical properties and formability of the Al/Mg laminated composites.…”
