Study on the effects of green-based plant extracts and water-proofers as anti-corrosion agents for steel-reinforced concrete slabs

Abstract: Widespread applications of reinforced concrete structures have been practiced since the 20th century because of their excellent properties despite their early corrosion degradation. For the control of such a problem, a design strategy of corrosion-resistant environments of the reinforced concrete structures is highly desirable for extending of a lifetime. The present research work was focused to investigate the effects of the green plant extract-based inhibitors from Vitex negundo and Catharanthus roseus leave… Show more

“…The METcS extract from stem powder of the T. cordifolia plant was acquired by soxhlet extraction using the rotatory evaporation technique, as explained elsewhere [34]. Then, the methanol extract was dried and stored at 4 °C before its use as biofuel additives.…”

“…Then, the ϕ corr value of each reinforcing concrete structure at the randomly fixed four points named as 1, 2, 3, 4, was recorded using a Hong Kong made UNI-T model digital voltmeter against the saturated calomel electrode (SCE), and recorded ϕ corr value is the average of four points. The SCE (reference) and the reinforced steel rod (working electrode) were connected to the voltmeter for recording potential values using the HCPM method, as described elsewhere (Bhattarai et al 2021). It is meaningful to note that, all the ϕ corr are expressed in SCE scale hereafter.…”

“…[27] As a result of these constraints of the waterproofing agents, a careful design of new anti-corrosive bio-components extracted from green parts of plants especially leaves, and their uses have proven to be an effective for the protection of different steels in aggressive environments, [28,29] and in concrete infrastructures. [30][31][32][33] Besides, Nepal origin Vitex negundo, [34] and Areca catechu [35] plant extracts proved as efficient corrosion inhibitors to upgrade anti-corrosion properties of mild steel in different corrosive environments, even in concrete slab, [36] which is presumably owing to the presence of abundant amounts of hetero-atoms and aromatic ring compounds as the major phytoconstituents in the plant extracts. [37] However, little is known about the inhibiting aspects of leaf extract of Mangifera indica plant on the steel corrosion.…”
