Study on the Effect of Irradiance Variability on the Efficiency of the Perturb-and-Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm

Abstract: Irradiance variability is one of the main challenges for using photovoltaic energy. This variability affects the operation of maximum power point trackers (MPPT) causing energy losses. The logic of the Perturb-and-Observe MPPT algorithm is particularly sensitive to quick irradiance changes. We quantified the existing relation between irradiance variations and efficiency loss of the logic of the Perturb-and-Observe MPPT algorithm, along with the sensitivity of the MPPT to its control parameters. If the algorith… Show more

“…In any case, by analyzing the literature experimental data on small-scale systems, it is possible to assume that the operating power range is 5%-100% and 20%-100% respectively for PEM and AWE (Bertuccioli et al, 2014;Kiaee et al, 2015;Stansberry et al, 2017;Martinez Lopez et al, 2023).…”

“…Renewable and sustainable energy sources have emerged as an imperative substitute for fossil fuels, which are associated with numerous adverse environmental consequences, including climate change and air pollution manifested as CO2 emissions [1,2]. Among renewable energy sources, solar energy is considered the most viable renewable energy source for addressing these challenges due to its abundant availability [3,4], pollution-free, and requires little maintenance [5,6]. Nonetheless, optimizing photovoltaic (PV) energy output has become challenging for researchers [7].…”

“…This causes changes in the MPP point. When the operating point of a photovoltaic generator (GPV) is far from the maximum power point (MPP), considerable power losses will be caused [3]. On the other hand, the analysis of various behaviours of a PV generator confirms that it is rarely compatible with its load without the need for an adaptation stage [4].…”
