Study on the correlation between synaptic reconstruction and astrocyte after ischemia and the influence of electroacupuncture on rats

Abstract: EA is helpful for synaptic reorganization, which may be related to its effect on intervening the activation state of astrocytes and promoting the beneficial interaction between astrocytes and synapses. Acupuncture could start the adjustment of neuron-glial network so as to promote the synaptic reorganization, which may be the key mechanism of treating cerebral ischemia.

“…By reading the full text of the remaining 208 articles which reported the efficacy of BBA in animal models of focal cerebral ischemia, 54 studies were excluded because the outcome measure was neither neurological function score (NFS) nor infarct volume (IV); 48 studies were excluded because other forms of acupuncture or TCM were used in control group; 34 were excluded because of combination with body acupunctures; 18 studies were removed due to the deficiency of useful data and the problem of duplicate publication. Ultimately, 54 eligible studies were identified (Figure 1)34353637383940414243444546474849505152535455565758596061626364656667686970717273747576777879; Li JA, unpublished Master's thesis, 2005; Wang C, unpublished Master's thesis, 2005; Jin JF, unpublished PhD thesis, 2005; Luo T, unpublished Master's thesis, 2006; Chen X, unpublished Master's thesis, 2007; Ding J, unpublished Master's thesis, 2007; Wang EL, unpublished PhD thesis, 2008; Wu HY, unpublished PhD thesis, 2010.…”

“…In our study, single-time EA reduced the expression of GMF β in striatum. Because GMF activation is found to be correlated with glial activation [38], EA application is also revealed to reduce ischemic-induced astrocyte activation [39]; therefore, single-time EA might suppress astroglial activation through downregulating glia maturation factor. We did not find significant differences among sham group, ischemia group, and EA group at day 7 after reperfusion.…”

“…Synapsin-1 and synaptophysin are presynaptic proteins which regulate neurotransmitter release and efficiency of the synaptic vesicle cycle [26, 27]. EA at the Baihui (Du 20) and Dazhui (GV14) acupoints could exert beneficial effects on synaptic reconstruction [24]. Our data showed that EA, not sham-EA treatment, could effectively alleviate the downregulation of synapsin-1 and synaptophysin induced by A β injection.…”

“…Although acupuncture is a potential intervention for the treatment of AD [1416], the effect is still controversial [23]. In this study, we selected acupoints Baihui (Du 20) and Shenshu (BL 23), which directly communicate with or nourish the brain, to verify the effectiveness of EA for AD [24]. We found that a single infusion of A β 1–40 effectively impaired learning and memory behavior.…”
