Study on the copolymerization of phenyl ester-type monomrs comprising mesogenic groups in the side chain

Abstract

Four copolymer systems from six acrylic monomers were prepared. The relative reactivity ratios in the copolymers were as follows:for p-butoxyphenyl p'-acryloyloxybenzoate (BPAB) with p-phenyl p'-acryloyloxy ethoxybenzoate (PAEB), rBV^B = 0.39 and rVAEB = 0.65;--for BPAB with p-butoxyphenyl p'-acryloyloxy ethoxybenzoate (BPAEB), rBVAB = 0.94 and rBp^E B = 0.45; --for p-phenyl p'-acryloyloxybenzoate (PAB) with p-octyloxyphenyl p'-methacryloyloxy ethoxybenzoate (OPMEB), rpAB = 0.29 and rOPME B =-1.24;--for PAB with I~-methoxyphenyl p'-acryloyloxy ethoxybenzoate (MPAEB), rpA B = 1.15 and rMPAE B ----0.62.All of the copolymers are mesomorphic systems. Plots of their transition temperatures against the copolymer composition have a minimum for PAB/OPMEB and PAB/ MPAEB systems and a break-point for BPAB/PAEB and BPAB/BPAEB systems.
