Mountain forests are at risk as the consequences of climate change will likely lead to altered tree species boundaries. Characterizing food webs along elevation gradients in primary forests may help to predict the potential consequences of such changes, for example with regard to the decomposition of dead organic matter. Here, for the first time, we studied trophic variations in two species‐rich microarthropod taxa, Collembola and Oribatida, along an elevation gradient of primary forest at Changbai Mountain, China. Samples were taken at seven elevations of 150‐m elevational difference between 800 and 1700 m. At each elevation, Collembola and Oribatida were extracted from litter samples of eight subplots. We applied three state‐of‐the‐art methods to elucidate trophic positions and basal resource use at community level: Bulk stable isotope analysis of nitrogen (Δ15Nbulk) and carbon (Δ13Cbulk), compound‐specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA‐AA), and dietary routing of neutral lipid fatty acids (NLFAs). Trophic positions calculated using Δ15Nbulk and CSIA‐AA (TPCSIA) in both taxa increased similarly with elevation by about half and one third of a trophic position, respectively. Stable isotope mixing models and linear discriminant analysis bootstrapping using δ13C of essential amino acids indicated fungi as the most important resource at all elevations for both taxa. Also, proportions of marker NLFAs changed little across elevations in both taxa; overall high proportions of linoleic acid indicated high fungal contributions, but in Collembola the contribution of bacterial markers was generally higher than in Oribatida. Δ13Cbulk did not respond linearly to the elevation gradient; however, changes in elevation differed between Collembola and Oribatida. A strong linear relationship between δ15N of phenylalanine and δ15N of litter indicated litter as the basis of energy channels in both taxa. Overall, food web functioning likely changes with changing forest types along elevation gradients, with microarthropods switching from feeding closer to the base of the food web at lower elevations to feeding at higher trophic levels at higher elevations, potentially compromising their role in litter decomposition and nutrient cycling.

The analysis of spatiotemporal changes of landscape patterns is of great significance for forest protection. However, the selection of landscape metrics is often subjective, and existing composite landscape metrics rarely consider the effects of spatial correlation. A more objective approach to formulating composite landscape metrics involves proper weighting that incorporates spatial structure information into integrating individual conventional metrics selected for building a composite metric. This paper proposes an integrated spatial landscape index (ISLI) based on variogram modeling and entropy weighting. It was tested through a case study, which sought to analyze spatiotemporal changes in the landscape pattern in the Changbai Mountains over 30 years based on six global land-cover products with a fine classification system at 30 m resolution (GLC_FCS30). The test results confirm: (1) spatial structure information is useful for weighting conventional landscape pattern metrics when constructing ISLI as validated by correlation analysis between the incorporated conventional metrics and their variogram ranges. In terms of the range parameters of different land cover types, broadleaf forest and needleleaf forest have much larger range values than those of other land cover types; (2) DIVISION and PLAND, two of the conventional landscape metrics considered for constructing ISLI, were assigned the greatest weights in computing ISLI for this study; and (3) ISLI values can be used to determine the dominant landscape types. For the study area, ISLI values of broadleaf forests remained the largest until 2020, indicating that forest landscape characteristics were the most prominent during that period. After 2020, the dominance of needleleaf forest gradually increased, with its ISLI value reaching a maximum of 0.91 in 2025. Therefore, the proposed ISLI not only functions as an extension and complement to conventional landscape metrics but also provides more comprehensive information concerning landscape pattern dynamics.

Modification of Density Dependence and Habitat Filtering on Seedling Survival of Different Mycorrhizal-Type Tree Species in Temperate Forests

Conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) and habitat filtering are critical to seedling survival. However, the relative importance of the two processes in affecting survival of seedlings with different types of mycorrhizae remains unclear. In this study, the effects of CNDD and habitat filtering on the survival of tree seedlings with different mycorrhizal types were investigated at different successional stages of a temperate forest in the Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve, Northeast China. Conspecific negative density dependence and habitat filtering significantly affected seedling survival. In the early successional stage, the interactions between conspecific neighbor tree density and light availability and soil properties significantly negatively affected survival of all species and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) seedlings in the community, but not that of ectomycorrhizal (EcM) seedlings, and the CNDD effect was stronger on AM seedlings than on EcM seedlings. In the mid-successional stage, CNDD effects were stronger on EcM seedlings. Therefore, different types of mycorrhizal seedlings responded differently to CNDD and habitat filtering mechanisms during community succession, and thus, tree mycorrhizal association could determine the effects of CNDD and habitat filtering on seedling survival in temperate forests.
