Study on the capacity of cold-formes steel built-up battened colums under axial compression

Abstract: This paper presents the theoretical and numerical investigation results of the pin ended cold-formed steel built-up battened columns under axial compression. The finite element model was developed using the finite element software ABAQUS. The comparison of finite element analysis results match with the test results available in the literature shows that the analysis model can simulate the buckling behaviour and ultimate capacity of cold-formed steel built-up columns. Three types of sections were selected based… Show more

“…The elastic modulus ( E ) and the yield stress of the material ( f y ) considered as reported by Young and Chen (2008) in Table 2. In order to account for the elasto-plastic material behaviour, a bilinear stress–strain curve is adopted, having a tangent modulus ( Et ) of 204 MPa (Anbarasu et al, 2014a). Elastic perfectly plastic stress–strain curve obeying von Mises yield criterion was adopted for material modelling in the parametric study.…”

“…Piyawat et al (2013) developed an axial load capacity equation for doubly-symmetric built-up cold-formed sections. Anbarasu et al (2014a) presented numerical investigation results on built-up batten column composed of two lipped channels and also examined the applicability of current DSM on the built-up batten columns. Anbarasu et al (2014b) extended this study on built-up battened columns made of web stiffened lipped channels and proposed simplified method to design built-up battened columns.…”

“…Piyawat et al (2013) developed a simplified axial load capacity equation for doubly symmetric built-up cold-formed tubular and Isections subject to both global and distortional buckling. Anbarasu et al (2014aAnbarasu et al ( , 2014b numerically assessed the conservatism of two DSM design approaches of CFS built-up battened columns composed of lipped channels and web stiffened lipped channels, and proposed simplified method to design built-up battened columns. Li et al (2014) studied the two types of CFS builtup sections and proposed a modified design, provision to predict the ultimate strength of these members.…”
