Study on the Applicability of the Modified Tokuhashi Score in Patients With Surgically Treated Vertebral Metastasis

Abstract: To present the results obtained from surgical treatment of patients with vertebral metastases, comparing them with the modified Tokuhashi score in order to validate the applicability of this score for prognostic predictions and for choosing surgical treatments. Methods: This was a retrospective study on 157 patients treated surgically for spinal metastasis in Erastus Gaertner Hospital in Curitiba. The Tokuhashi score was applied retrospectively to all the patients. The patients' actual survival time was compar… Show more

“…[ 10 11 13 15 16 19 ] Contrary to what was reported in other countries, metastases of primary lung tumor were less frequent in our patients as well as in local reports. [ 10 13 15 19 20 ] This finding may be related to the lack of target therapies in our country, which has increased the survival of these patients. It was not possible to identify the primary tumor in 7 (6.8%) patients.…”

“…It implies that operation before palsy (Group A) leads to a better survival. In previous studies, with better Tomita or revised Tokuhashi score, more aggressive intervention is suggested, such as en bloc, wide, or marginal excision [ 2 , 3 ]. Our study demonstrates that palliative decompression achieves acceptable outcome in patients with good Tomita or revised Tokuhashi score.…”
