Study on swelling behavior of poly(sodium acrylate-co-2-acryloylamino-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)/attapulgite macroporous superabsorbent composite

Abstract: A fast swelling sulfonic acid macroporous superabsorbent composite is prepared by copolymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid, 2‐acryloylamino‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid, and attapulgite. The effects of pH values, ions, and their concentration on swelling behavior of sample are investigated. The results show that the swelling behavior of sample is affected by pH value. The supercase Π diffusion is observed in all NaCl solutions with different pH value. An overshooting effect appears in all solu… Show more

“…[ 34 ] The copolymer CP and the CLG shows an amorphous halo with low intensity and a diffused and broad peak at 2 θ of 19° and 20.1°, respectively, as also reported elsewhere. [ 13, 27 ] As the APG clay is incorporated in the CP, that is, in the CPAC composite, the XRD peaks of APG are not observed because of encapsulation of the clay in the gel network. Furthermore, the agglomerated pure APG clay is much bigger than the single fibrous grain of this clay present in the gel matrix, which cannot crystallize because of limited space and time for crystallization as also reported elsewhere.…”

“…APG‐incorporated polymer was also reported as an efficient adsorbent. [ 13 ] Instead of physical blending, CLG and APG were added in situ during copolymerization of HEMA and IA for controlled incorporation of CLG and APG in the CP network. The objective of the work was to develop a functional biocomposite gel for enhanced adsorption properties by integrating multifunctional polymers and clay.…”

“…The maximum value of the water uptake capacity was attained when the swelling and deswelling rates were equal. 57 Then, more metal cations entered the internal network, which enhanced the cross-linking degree. At this point, the deswelling of SB@PDA/ PAA had an advantage over swelling, resulting in the reduction of the water absorbency.…”

“…The addition of hydrophilic clay such as MMT, kaoline, attapulgite, and vermiculite (VMT) can reduce production costs of SAPs and improve their hydrophilic properties . However, the polymerization method of SAPs based on hydrophilic clay is only limited to BP.…”
