Ancestral halls in Canton region are an important part of culture and architectural art in Canton region. Currently, research mostly analyzes from the perspective of clan culture and architectural crafts, and rarely explores architectural characteristics and inheritance from the perspective of cultural gene and constructs the gene map of architectural culture. Taking the theory of cultural gene as the starting point, this paper extensively studies the cultural background and inheritance process of cultural genes of ancestral halls in Canton region through literature research and field research. Based on the thinking method of gene reverse transcription in biology and the cultural three-level hierarchy, the main cultural factors were extracted and classified to establish the cultural gene library, gene hierarchical diagram and gene maps of Cantonese ancestral halls. The Analytic Hierarchy Process method (AHP) was used to screen and rank the cultural factors analyzing their importance in all levels in the cultural gene hierarchical diagram. To summarize, this paper discussed the development and evolution of cultural factors of Cantonese ancestral halls and their contemporary inheritance requires more attention on the innovative translation design of core cultural factors with higher importance, based on the principle of authentic and integral preservation of original, providing new perspective and decision-making references for the inheritance of ancestral halls in Canton region.

The Tibetan Plateau is one of the world’s most extreme habitats and one of the most challenging ecosystems on the planet. Many multi-ethnic traditional villages have developed on the plateau over its long history, and are an essential component of human settlement. It is critical to research them, and it is also significant for China’s goals to make the Tibetan Plateau a distinctive ethnic cultural preservation site and a world tourist destination. While there have been limited studies focusing on villages in the entire Tibetan Plateau area, as a result, we aim to expand the field of research on the regional study of traditional villages and make progress in research throughout the Tibetan Plateau. The question addressed in this study is what the current characteristics of the distribution of traditional villages on the Tibetan Plateau are, and we attempt to propose suggestions for the preservation of traditional villages according to the distribution characteristics. Methods such as the closest neighbor index, kernel density estimates, and spatial autocorrelation analysis are used to investigate the characteristics of the spatial distribution of traditional Chinese villages on the Tibetan Plateau, as well as regression analysis of the factors that control this distribution. The findings indicate that traditional villages are unevenly distributed over the plateau, with fewer villages in the northwest and more in the southeast, showing an agglomeration type of distribution. The village distribution on provincial and municipal is uneven with a large step difference. Tibetans make up the majority of the population in the villages, but other ethnic groups are present at the margins of the plateau. The distribution of traditional villages shows “big scattered, small gather” characteristics, and one core cluster (the Hehuang Valley area of Qinghai Province) and five high-density areas (the western Sichuan Plateau; the Three Parallel Rivers area of Yunnan Province; the Yarlung Zangbo, Nyangqu, and Lhasa rivers (YZN) area of Tibet Province; the Yushu area of Qinghai Province; and the Gannan area of Gansu and Sichuan province). The natural environment has the strongest influence on the distribution of traditional villages, followed by human impacts, especially concerning the distribution of single and multi-ethnic villages, and socioeconomic factors, which have multiple influences.

The Indigenous spirituality of a hunter-gatherer tribe (Temiar) of Peninsular Malaysia, in the Southeast Asian region, has been fractured by religious conversions into three religious communities-Traditional, Muslim, and Christian. Based on the theoretical framework of strong-ties and weak-ties rationalities (Sundararajan, 2020), this study explored the varying degrees of change in cognition and emotion when the kinship-based spirituality of Indigenous Temiar came under the influence, through conversion, of the globalizing world religions. Thirty-seven traditional-Temiar, 32 Temiar-Muslim, and 32 Temiar-Christian took part in the semistructured interviews which elicited suffering narratives. The transcripts were then translated and back-translated into English for psycholinguistic coding via Sundararajan-Schubert Word Count and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count on linguistic variables that operationalize the cognitive styles and emotional expression profiles. The between-group comparison revealed that traditional-Temiar and Temiar-Muslim groups retained much of the strong-ties cognitive styles of their ancestral niche, as evidenced by a significantly higher score in "collective self-representation" (e.g., we and they) compared to the Temiar-Christian group. For emotional processing, Temiar-Christians overall utilized significantly more "experience-distant modes" (e.g., intellectualization) of emotional expression than their counterparts. This mixed-method study showcased the Indigenous spirituality of an understudied tribe (Temiar) in Peninsular Malaysia. It demonstrated that changes in cognition and emotion can happen within a single generation if the conversion entails systematic weakening of strong-ties rationality, whereas if the conversion is friendly to the kinship-based infrastructures of traditional societies, converts may retain much of the traditional strong-ties rationality. This documentation of stability as well as change of an Indigenous spirituality can shed some light on the resilience and challenges of traditional strong-ties societies in the globalizing era.
