Abstract. In this work, the first results of the analysis on total electron content (TEC) data before, during and after the geomagnetic storm of September 8, 2017 are reported. A common response to geomagnetic storms due to the southern vertical interplanetary magnetic field (Bz) is the enhancement of the electron density in the ionosphere. Vertical TEC (VTEC) from the Center for Orbit determination in Europe (CODE) along with a statistical method were used to identify positive and/or negative ionospheric storms in response to the geomagnetic storm of September 8, 2017. When analysing the response to the G4 storm of September 8, 2017 it was indeed possible to observed an enhancement of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA); however what it is was unexpected, was the identification of a local TEC enhancement (LTE) to the south of the EIA (~ 40° S), right over New Zealand and extending towards the south-eastern coast of Australia and also eastward towards the Pacific). This was a very transitory LTE that lasted approximately 2 hours, starting at ~ 02:00 UT on September 8 where its maximum VTEC increase was of 241,2 %. Using the same statistical method we looked for LTEs in a similar category geomagnetic storm, the G4 storm of St. Patrick's day of 2015; however for this storm, no LTEs were identified. As also indicated in a past recent study for the August 15, 2015 geomagnetic storm, an association between the LTE and the excursion of Bz observed during the September 8, 2017 storm is observed. Nevertheless, it is more likely that a direct impact of the super-fountain effect along with another ionospheric physical mechanism may be playing an important role in the production of this LTE.

In this short report a new aurora intensity index (AI) is defined as the total X‐ray intensity derived from the images obtained by the aurora X‐ray camera of PIXIE on board the Polar satellite. We found a linear relationship between the magnetosphere sub‐storm index (AE) and the new aurora intensity index (AI). Among the 83 data sets chosen from 1997 to 2001, 56.6% of which has the linear correlation coefficients larger than 0.60 (the maximum is 0.97). We suggest that auroral X‐ray intensity (AI) is a candidate of a new real‐time index obtained from satellite observations for monitoring magnetosphere sub‐storms.

An event of multiple magnetic cloud (Multi-MC) in interplanetary space on March 31, 2001 caused the largest geomagnetic storm with Dst=-387nT during the 23 th solar maximum (2000∼2001). By analyzing the data from the ACE spacecraft, we describe the characteristics of magnetic fields and plasma within this Multi-MC at 1 AU. We also identify its solar sources, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) by utilizing the observations from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the GOES satellite. In this instance, the Multi-MC became more effective with the extraordinary enhanced southward magnetic fields, and largely extended the duration of the Dst storm. The observations and the theoretical analysis reveal that the strength of the magnetic fields including the southward component increased several times due to the compression between the sub-clouds in the Multi-MC, and therefore intensified the corresponding effectiveness. Thus, we suggest that the compression between the sub-clouds of Multi-MC should be a mechanism in causing great geomagnetic storms. In addition, we find that the CMEs, which formed the Multi-MC, seemed not to originate from the same solar region.
