The use of antimicrobial agents has become a routine practice for the treatment of paediatric illnesses. The uncontrolled use of antibiotics has caused a rise in antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to assess the antibiotic prescribing patterns in paediatric patients at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. This was a cross-sectional study conducted between April 2019 to July 2019. The study population included both in-patients and outpatients aged between one month and eighteen years whose medical files were reviewed. A sample size of 357 medical files was conveniently sampled. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21.0 was used for data analysis. A chi-square test was used to assess the association between categorical variables. A p<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant at 95% confidence level. The majority of the medical files 230 (64.4%) were for paediatrics in the age group of 1 month to 5 years. Antibiotic prescribing was found to be 78.7%. The study revealed that 119 (33.3%) of patients required antibiotics and were on antibiotic treatment while 46 (12.9%) did not require antibiotics but were on antibiotic treatment. The most common diseases 147 (41.2%) were those affecting the respiratory system. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics were penicillins 154 (54.8%), followed by cephalosporins 88 (31.3%). The association between age, white blood cell count status, and system of illness with antibiotic use were statistically significant (χ 2 =15.083, p=0.001; χ 2 = 6.571, p=0.037 and χ 2 =27.717, p<0.0001). The study also found that the frequency of antibiotic use was high among paediatric patients as per the World Health Organization's prescribing indicators. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics to paediatric patients were penicillins.

BACKGROUNDThe invention of antimicrobials emerged as a transformational turning point in the reduction of the burden of communicable disease in the 20 th century. Antimicrobials are among the most widely prescribed therapeutic agents across the world. The use of antibiotics among children is different from adults due to a number of reasons like a lack of data on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, efficacy and safety of drugs, different physiological spectrum among different age groups-preterm neonates, full-term neonates, infants and toddlers, older children and adolescents, paediatrics populations being vulnerable to the majority of the illnesses and the adverse effect of irrational use of antimicrobials being more serious among children than adults. However, antibiotic use is not explored much in a paediatric population. Existing reports of population-based antibiotic use in children are relatively few, so the present study was carried out in Berhampur city with the objectives of finding out the pattern of oral antibiotic use in children in the outpatient setting of a tertiary care hospital.

Background: Rational use of antibiotics is very essential for improving patient safety on long term use to avoid antibiotic resistance in pediatrics. The main objective of our research was to know the prescription pattern Objective: of antimicrobial agents in pediatric population. A prospective observational study was Material and Methods: conducted in the department of general medicine in district general hospital, Amravati for the period of 6 months. All patients of either sex aged <16 years receiving any category of antimicrobial agents were included and the prescribing and tapering pattern of antibiotics were reviewed. Prescribing pattern was observed and analysed in 120 Results: participants during the study period. The majority of the 120 children who received antimicrobials was males (61%) and hailed from rural and low socioeconomic background. Gentamicin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, amikacin, and amoxicillin were predominantly used which indicates that aminoglycoside and 3 generation cephalosporins uses most rd frequently in the pediatric age group The most common indications for these drugs were used for lower respiratory. tract infection (LRTI), upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and acute febrile illness (AFI) Two antimicrobial. related ADR s were observed in the pediatric age group Not much variation was found in the pattern of '. Conclusion: prescription amongst the healthcare professionals. Hence, the present study concludes that the prescribing pattern of antimicrobials in the pediatric patient of the hospital is found to be rational according to the guidelines.
