Study on Physico-Chemical Parameters of Wastewater Effluents from Cotton Development Plant of Maroua-Cameroon

Abstract: The present research work aimed to study some of the important physicochemical parameters of wastewater effluents obtained from Maroua cotton processing plant namely "SODECOTON". The effluents were studied from June 2016 to August 2017. A preliminary investigation was carried out on the source of water used by the plant and management of its wastewater effluent. All were analyzed according to the standard methods. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solid,… Show more

“…COD is a measurement of the oxygen equivalent of the organic matter in a sample which is affected by oxidation of a strong chemical oxidant (Abba et al, 2018). Obtained values of this analysis varied from 7630 mg O 2 /L to 10670 mg O 2 /L, well above the maximum value of 250 mg O 2 /L expected by WHO, Table 1.…”

“…Total Hardness was determined by complexometric titration using Eriochrome Black-T as an indicator by EDTA method and Chloride was estimated by Mohr's method using AgNO 3 solution and Potassium Chromate as an indicator (APHA, 1985;Abba et al, 2018) The amount of dissolved oxygen was determined by acid-medium determination (H 2 SO 4 ) with a solution of sodium thiosulfate in the presence of manganese sulphate (APHA, 1998).…”

“…Human activities are not static, and the contaminations of the environment (water, air and soil) globally are the results of increased population and various anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, industrialization, urbanization, change in the pattern of life and climate change (Olujimi et al 2012;Ullah et al 2018). Majority of the results or products of these contamination go to the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and consequently have a great impact on the physicochemical properties of wastewater (Paltahe et al 2018). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have therefore been identified as one of the main sources of variation in the physicochemical parameters of the aquatic ecosystem due to the discharge of partially treated effluent containing different hazardous materials into the receiving water bodies (Fatta-Kassinos et al 2011;Paltahe et al 2018).…”
