Study on Fabric Surface Roughness and its Influence on Worsted Fabric Abrasion Resistance

Abstract: Surface roughness is of paramount importance in predicting tactile properties of fabrics. This study aimed at investigating surface roughness and the effect of this property on the abrasion resistance of worsted fabrics. Nine different groups of worsted fabrics were produced. The fabrics had three weave types and three areal densities. A non-contact laser based system was developed to scan the surface of the fabrics. In order to extract the surface roughness profile, a new method of data analysis was presented… Show more

“…Often an analysis of 2D surface profiles is not sufficient. The analysis of 3D outlines is therefore of key importance, with particular emphasis on spatial and volumetric parameters which play a major role in the process of wear, 27 which is the case with casting molds or injection inserts, including the additive manufactured ones. On the basis of individual surface texture parameters, it is possible to obtain characteristic information about the tested 3D surface.…”

“…Alirezazadeh et al 17 investigated the effect of fiber fineness on the frictional behavior of polypropylene fibers using a high-precision experimental setup Tourlonias and Bueno 18 simulated the weaving motion of yarn-induced friction by varying the experimental parameters, including initial normal load, oscillation frequency, and oscillation angle.Ning et al 19 explored the effect of coating on the yarn on yarn abrasion performances. Lots of work 2025 related to the abrasion performances mainly focused on the fabric or composites performance. For the frictional fatigue mechanism, most of the work focused on the abrasion fatigue failure of fiber-reinforced composites, a few paid attention to the fiber frictional fatigue failure mechanism.…”

“…If these deviations are large, the surface is rough; if they are small, the surface is smooth. 810 The surface roughness of woven fabrics plays an important role in determining how different fabric articles will interact with their environment. 6,8,9,11 The fabric surface roughness properties are very important parameters for fabric tactile properties in the engineering design of many textile products including medical textiles, hygiene and healthcare products, sportswear, underwear, bed-sheets, lingerie, and other consumer products having special requirements with sensitive surface tactile properties.…”
