Study on Expansion Process of EDM Arc Plasma

Abstract: In order to understand the phenomena of electrical discharge machining (EDM), the characteristics of transition arc plasma in EDM were investigated. The arc plasma was directly observed with a high speed video camera. In addition, to learn more about arc plasma expansion, plasma temperature was measured by spectroscopy. The arc plasma temperature was obtained by measuring the radiant fluxes of two different wavelengths from the arc plasma and applying the line pair method. Furthermore, a new expansion model fo… Show more

“…The increase in pulse on time means applying the same heating flux for a longer time. This will cause an increase of heat that is conducted into the workpiece as the plasma channel expands which will result in an increase in the MRR [13,14]. As the discharge duration increases, the pressure inside the plasma channel will be lower [15].…”

“…A similar effect is observed with the pulse duration (on-time). These observations can be found in the works by Jilani (1982), Pandey (1986), Ben Salah (2006), Natsu (2006), Kojima (2007) and Yeo (2007) that are already included in the references of the paper. 11) In Page 11, section 5 the authors mention that "However, these data correspond to a given EDM regime, and therefore will vary for other regimes".…”

“…It also showed its dependency on material's physical properties. Das (2003), Descoeudres (2005), Natsu (2006) and Kojima (2007) made optical observations using high speed framing cameras that corroborate the initial fast growth and later stabilization. This experimental observation is commonly expressed mathematically using Equation 2:…”

“…Patel et al [5] developed an erosion model with assumptions that a constant fraction of the total power supplied to the gap was transferred to the anode and the generated spark produced a Gaussiandistributed disc heat flux. Natsu et al [6] proposed a firststage-expansion model to study the EDM process. In their model, the diameter of the spark channel was assumed to expand to 0.6 mm within 3 μs after the dielectric was broken down and then remained constant.…”
