An experimental study was done to observe the hypocholesterolaemic effect of wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum) juice on experimentally induced hypercholesterolaemic rats, especially on serum low density lipoprotein (LDL) level, which was carried out in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, between July, 2009 and June, 2010. A total number of 48 healthy adult male Long Evans rats (Norwegian strain) were used for the present study. 6 rats were taken in each group of total 8 groups treated differently with 1 control group. Rats of the first 5 groups were sacrificed at 29 th day and their serum total cholesterol levels were measured. The rest of the rats were sacrificed at 57 th day and their serum total cholesterol levels were measured. The mean serum LDL of 10ml/kg grass juice fed normal rats was decreased by 11.64% than that of the laboratory diet fed control group (P<0.01). Serum LDL of the group of rats treated with 10ml/kg grass juice and1% cholesterol diet were decreased by 36.59% than that of the hypercholesterolaemic control group (P<0.001). Serum LDL of the hypercholesterolaemic rats treated with 10ml/kg grass juice for 28 days were decreased by 29.10%, and in hypercholesterolaemic rats treated with 20ml/kg grass juice for 28 days were decreased by 39.46% (P<0.001). Reduction of LDL as evident on hypercholesterolaemic rats treated with 20ml/kg grass juice, which was similar to hypercholesterolaemic rats treated with 0.14mg/kg Atorvastatin for 28 days.

Nutraceuticals are organic and traditional foods consumed nowadays to maintain a healthy lifestyle and get rid of lifestyle diseases like obesity, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, etc. Globally, herbal products have become increasingly popular in recent years. Wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum) is a nutraceutical proven to be a dietary supplement and beneficial for cancer-suffering patients. Wheatgrass possesses many beneficial antioxidant properties: anti-cancer activity, anti-bacterial activity, anti-fungal activity, and anti-microbial activity. Due to the presence of resistant starch, lignans, phenolic acids, alkylresorcinols, and numerous antioxidant components, including carotenoids and tocopherols, this herbal plant is deserving attention as a source of dietary fiber. Patients consume wheatgrass during cancer treatment as an adjunct to reduce toxicity associated with drugs and chemotherapy and ultimately improve long-term outcomes. Studies have proved that wheatgrass helps treat pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer. So, the multi-targeted herbal drug—wheatgrass—is used as an adjunct therapy alongside conventional medicine to treat cancer and other diseases. A promising therapeutic nutraceutical for avoiding lifestyle disorders is wheatgrass.

Hypercholesterolemia is one of the important causes of cardiovascular disease related mortality and morbidity and recently it has become a significant issue in public health problem of developing countries. The purpose of the study was to see the effect of glycine max (soy bean) on serum lipid profile of experimentally induced hyperlipidemic rats. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by high cholesterol diet containing 1% cholesterol in olive oil. This study was done on 24 long Norwegian rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing about 200-210 gram. For convenience, the study was divided into Experiment I and Experiment II. In experiment I, 12 rats were divided into two groups- Group A (n = 6, control group) fed on laboratory diet and Group B (n=6) fed on laboratory diet and soy bean extract for 35 days. In experiment II, the remaining 12 rats were divided into 2 groups, Group C (n=6) were fed on laboratory diet and high cholesterol diet (HCD) for 35 days and Group D (n=6) were fed laboratory diet and high cholesterol diet on initial 10 days and soy bean extract was added along with high cholesterol diet for next 25 days. Serum TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C were measured after 35 days. HCD increased TG, TC and LDL-C significantly in group C. Glycine max (soy bean) treated group showed that it decreased plasma TC, TG and LDL-C in experimentally induced hyperlipidemic rats but Glycine max (soy bean) did not show any significant lipid lowering effect in normolipidemic rats. The results of this experimental study indicate that Glycine max can act as a cholesterol lowering agent and thereby can improve cardiovascular functions.Bangladesh J Med Biochem 2017; 10(1): 21-26
