“…Its use has increasingly drawn a wider range of interest as a communication and imaging chat system between health care professionals and patients, as well as among health care professionals themselves. In several regions around the world and particularly in rural areas and low- and middle-income countries, the use of WhatsApp has been shown to facilitate communication among health care professionals in terms of faster problem identification and immediate acute management [ 4 , 11 , 25 ]. Recently, studies have reported the increased presence of WhatsApp in medicine and many other health care fields, which reflects the increased acceptance of its use.…”

“…Although scientific studies on the use of WhatsApp Messenger remain scarce in the medical literature, increasing numbers of health professionals have adopted it as a communication interface and for the exchange of images and videos [ 9 , 10 ]. Its use does not seem to reduce image quality in the conversion from analog to digital formats, thus providing the ability to identify sufficient details for an adequate diagnosis and initial treatment with better efficacy than other modalities used for the same purposes [ 11 - 13 ].…”

“…The App is specifically designed for the purpose of burns consultation and tailored for the expertise of the experts. Several advantages like reduced consultation time [ 46 ], decreased hierarchy [ 16 , 47 ] and making senior physicians more accessible and involved in decisions [ 16 , 47 , 48 ] have been described by using WhatsApp, along with disadvantages such as incompatibility with medical record keeping [ 49 ], problems of data security, patient consent, confidentiality and privacy [ 17 , 45 , 50 , 51 ]. The end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp since April 2016 has improved security of data during transmission [ 45 ], although issues around storage of data persist [ 9 , 52 ].…”

“…Indeed, educational benefits [ 54 , 55 ], as well as feelings of empowerment among healthcare workers [ 56 ] from using mobile apps have been demonstrated in studies from other areas. For the clinical specialist and the gatekeeper, it has been suggested that image-based communication via smartphones will streamline the remote diagnostic process by speeding up communication [ 10 , 49 , 57 ], and by improving both triage and referrals [ 9 12 , 57 , 58 ]. However, these technical solutions might be at the expense of the interpersonal sides of the communication and there could be some information that the App has more difficulties to provide even for the clinical specialist and the gatekeeper position.…”

“…Some of the main advantages of using WhatsApp in healthcare are as follows: improvement of communication [22]; no requirement for a computer [23,24]; time saving [6,15]; possibility of an immediate response [20,25]; improvement of surgery performance and reduction of consultation time [25,26]; smoothing of hierarchy [8]; and the encouragement of junior doctors to seek help and improve the team perception of effectiveness [19]. On the other hand, existing risks or disadvantages have also been reported: increase in workload, disparity in the sense of urgency, worsening of professional relationships and risk of unprofessional behavior [18]; need to stay online 24 hours a day; impossibility to print a record of the chat; clinical information not being included in medical records; difficulty identifying patients in chats [16,19]; possible issues of privacy and data protection [20]; and the risk of reducing the autonomy of junior doctors [8]. Despite the many benefits, WhatsApp is used by professionals without political strategies, so it is necessary to develop guidelines for its usage by interdisciplinary groups and for communication between patients and professionals [27].…”
