Study on Dynamic Stability, Commutation Failure of Multi-Infeed HVDC Power Transmission System

Abstract: The electromagnetic transient modeling method was presented for the system, the system equivalent and model treatment were also concerned. The EMTDC (electromagnetic transient simulation software) was used to establish the simulation model covered a total of 5 HVDC transmission lines, including a ±800kV UHVDC transmission system from Yunnan to Guangdong. The use of detailed converter model can solve the problem of limitations in previous studies. The research focused on the dynamic stability and commutation fa… Show more

“…In [3], Node impedance matrix elements are used to describe the effect of DC links, and in [4], the change rate of voltage at converter buses after reactive power disturbance is applied to indicate the interactions between them. Reference [8] proves the consistency of these two definitions based on a decoupled model of MIDC system and gives the index of MISCR for determining the strength of receiving-end AC system.…”

“…Based on the value of multi-infeed critical SCR (MCSCR) and the indexes of SCR proposed by IEEE, reference [8] recommends indexes of MSCR as follows: (1) very weak system: MSCR i <2; (2) weak system: 2<MSCR i <3; (3) strong system: MSCR i >3.…”

“…After commutation failure, the pole control of inverter would enhance margin of commutation by decreasing firing angle, increasing advance firing angle. At the same time, when the DC voltage decreases to a threshold, the Voltage Dependent Current Limiter (VDCL) would take effect to decrease reference value of DC current and to restore normal commutation quickly [14]. To avoid commutation failure which leads by loss of firing pulse, pole control would switch after commutation failure 200ms.…”
