Study on dispersion-induced phase noise in an optical OFDM radio-over-fiber system at 60-GHz band

Abstract: While coherency between an RF-tone and OFDM signals in RoF systems at 60 GHz is de-correlated by fiber dispersion, both phase rotation term (PRT) on each subcarrier and inter-carrier interference (ICI) between subcarriers are induced at a receiver. We analytically calculate the powers of PRT and ICI under different parameters, such as subcarrier number, modulation format, laser linewidth and transmission distance. Moreover, dispersion-induced ICI is shown to be non-Gaussian distributed by its kurtosis, and its… Show more

“…Gaussian distributed and thus produces a larger BER. To improve the accuracy of the BER estimator, the distribution of the ICI should be identified, and the t-distribution has been shown to be a good fit [16]. An accurate BER estimator employing well-matched distribution of the ICI is beyond the scope of this work, since we are mainly focusing on the PRT effect.…”

“…The interplay between dispersion and laser PN in dispersion uncompensated transmission has been extensively studied for single carrier systems [12][13][14] and direct-detection optical OFDM systems [15,16]. This effect is negligible in conventional CO-OFDM systems, because the symbol duration is much longer than the dispersion induced walk-off and thus the laser PN is highly correlated across all the subcarriers.…”

“…PN on an OFDM transmission system causes a phase rotation term on each subcarrier. This destroys the orthogonality of subcarriers and results in intercarrier interference [19,20].…”
