Study on diagnostic method for water treed XLPE cable by loss current measurement

Abstract: Degradation of XLPE cable by water trees gives rise to harmonics in the loss current. The authors are engaged in development of diagnostic methods for water tree degradation utilizing these harmonic components. As a result of this development, the following was discovered. The harmonic components occurring in the loss current provide an extremely good indication of the state of degradation. Harmonic components arise as a result of the nonlinear voltagecurrent characteristic of water trees. An equivalent circui… Show more

“…However, the nonlinear characteristics of water tree degraded XLPE insulation have been generally accepted as an important feature and used as a diagnostic criterion (Yagi et al, 1998;Kawai et al, 2000;Hvidsten, 1999). Figure 3 shows the V-I characteristic of bridged water tree degraded power cables obtained from sheet specimens (Yagi et al, 1998). The V-I relationship may be approximated by the following nonlinear function: …”

“…Further, the time-and frequency-domain dielectric responses change with the water tree degradation: they have been studied as a diagnostic tool for XLPE cables [14][15][16][17][18][19]. Due to water tree degradation, harmonics are generated in the AC loss current of the XLPE cables [20][21][22][23], and a water tree degradation index was proposed on the basis of the harmonic current characteristics.…”
