Study on damage behavior of carbide tool for milling difficult-to-machine material

Abstract: Water chamber head is an important component of nuclear power unit, and the main material is 508 III steel of difficult-to-machine material, which has the characteristics of high hardness, high strength, high plasticity and high profile shrinkage, etc. During the milling process, the tool is subjected to the cyclic impact load, which make cutting force and cutting heat change violent and occurrence of tool damage failure accelerate. In this paper, the damage behavior of carbide tool for milling difficult-to-ma… Show more

“…1 Generally, the insert which suffers from violently cutting force, high cutting heat, and severe wear is the key factor in metal cutting because of the direct contact with the workpiece; hence, proper insert selection is a very important issue during metal cutting process. In today’s metalworking industry, many types of materials, such as high-carbon steel, carbide, 2 ceramics, 3 and diamonds and CBN 4 with different coatings 5 are used for cutting tools. In addition, tools with various shapes are also developed to meet the requirements in wide range of conditions, 6 which made the tool selection a multi-criteria decision-making problem in the presence of various selection criteria and a set of possible alternatives.…”

“…Cui et al 5 established the tool material damage model, proposed the critical condition of tool damage, and revealed the tool failure mechanism under thermo-mechanical load. Cheng et al 6 analyzed the failure mechanism of cemented carbide tool under cyclic impact load and the crack propagation law of tool material by milling 508 steel. The tool impact damage model was established, and the impact fracture limit condition of tool material was determined.…”
