A conservação de sementes recalcitrantes de seringueira é pouco duradoura, quando comparada com espécies que possuem sementes ortodoxas. Dessa forma, a preservação da espécie ocorre especialmente em campo na forma da planta inteira, o que requer muito espaço físico. A biotecnologia, por meio da técnica da criopreservação pode ser uma ferramenta auxiliadora na manutenção da viabilidade das sementes durante o seu armazenamento. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade de embriões zigóticos de seringueira, contendo o tecido de reserva, submetidos a distintas formas de vitrificação, seguido da conservação por meio da criopreservação. Para realização da pesquisa foram utilizadas sementes de seringueira, produzidas no estado de São Paulo. Primeiramente, foram estudadas distintas formas de vitrificação dos embriões zigóticos contendo o tecido de reserva. Os embriões foram avaliados logo após a vitrificação e aos sete dias de conservação em nitrogênio líquido a uma temperatura de -196ºC. As avaliações realizadas foram: determinação do teor de água, viabilidade dos embriões pelo teste de tetrazólio, germinação in vitro e condutividade elétrica. Os resultados foram analisados em delineamento inteiramente casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, sendo o primeiro fator época de avaliação (antes e após a criopreservação) e o segundo fator, as formas de vitrificação. Conclui-se que é necessário testar um maior período de exposição dos embriões nas soluções de vitrificação, especialmente nas soluções que apresentaram melhores resultados de viabilidade e germinação (soluções: • 50% de glicerol; • 30% (p/v) glicerol, 15% (p/v) de etilenoglicol, 15% (p/v) dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO) e 0,4 M de sacarose; e • 2 M glicerol seguidos de PVS). Adicionalmente, deve ser analisado um maior nível de desidratação dos embriões, o qual a espécie possa suportar, para que possam ser expostos a criopreservação.

The bud-grafting method is the most economical technique of Hevea brasiliensis propagation. This technique requires rootstock and scion. The high rootstock demand for the replanting program drives the seeds' suppliers to collect assorted seeds from cultivated fields, lead to a high variation in the germination rate. The time from seed dehiscent to seeding was hypothesized to be crucial inflicting an inconsistency in the germination rate and seedling rootstock growth. This present study used rubber seeds of the GT1 clone which were laid under trees' shading to mimic the natural environment. Five laying periods were applied i.e., P0 (directly germinated, control), P1 (laid for one week), P2 (laid for two weeks), P3 (laid for three weeks), and P4 (laid for four weeks). Our study implied that the direct sowing after dehiscent was the best way to attain a high germination rate (GR) (51.67%) while delaying seed sowing for one week reduced the GR up to 22.04%. The longer delaying in P2, P3, and P4 did not show significant differences among them which were 13.33%, 1.19%, and 4.35% respectively. However, the seedling showed a similar growth rate including root/shoot ratio regardless of the laying period treatment. The necessity of establishing seed gardens for rootstock was highlighted in which the harvesting of the seeds could be controlled.

Indonesia is one of the major natural rubber-producing countries. The low rubber prices severely affect rubber agribusiness as farmers and rubber companies depend on latex as the only source of income. This condition leads to an unprecedented challenge to rubber agribusiness sustainability. This systematic review aims to encourage the use of part of rubber plants as a source of revenue for rubber plantations to maintain their sustainability. Non-latex parts of the rubber plant can be utilized, including latex serum and skim waste, parts of rubber seeds, and rubberwood. The strength of the ancillary product of Hevea brasiliensis is that the raw materials are abundant, yet the weakness is that the rubber companies have no experience exploiting them. The opportunity for utilizing is widely open, as many methods have been researched; however, the main thread is how to compete with the existing products. Therefore, careful market research and feasibility studies are recommended.
