Study on an Indoor Positioning System for Harsh Environments Based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy

Abstract: This paper presents a study of positioning system that provides advanced information services based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technologies. It uses Wi-Fi for rough positioning and BLE for fine positioning. It is designed for use in public transportation system stations and terminals where the conditions are “hostile” or unfavourable due to signal noise produced by the continuous movement of passengers and buses, data collection conducted in the constant presence thereof, multipath fading, non-lin… Show more

“…The best classic interpolation algorithm was used in this work, namely k-NN , but it was shown to exhibit some estimation limitations. Whereas k-NN has been proven to be an excellent multidimensional interpolation algorithm in a number of applications [ 28 , 29 , 30 ], it is limited if we want to include a priori information available from our problem. This has motivated the proposal of kernel methods, and particularly, the proposal of SVR.…”

“…The triangulation geometrical method is currently the most commonly used positioning algorithm [11,18,21]. Unlike the trilateration method by measurement of distances, the triangulation geometrical method requires more than three sensors to perform the positioning action, and the positioning is performed by measuring the intensity of the received signal, or the transmission time of the signal [12], as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…Noise and environmental information are then used to assist location tracking. Currently, fingerprinting is the most widely used method of WPS-based IPS [13]. The fingerprinting algorithm first divides the indoor space in which positioning must be conducted into a fixed range and then stores the reference point (RP) position values in the database.…”
