Study on active tectonic faults using soil radon gas method in Viet Nam

Abstract: This paper presents the results of soil radon gas measurement in three areas, including Thac Ba and Song Tranh 2 hydropower plants, and the planned locations of the nuclear power plants Ninh Thuan 1&2 using solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) with the aim of clarifying the activity of tectonic faults in these areas. The activity of tectonic faults was assessed through radon activity index KRn (the ratio between anomaly and threshold), which was divided into 5 levels as follows ultra-high (K Rn > 10), h… Show more

“…The 222 Rn activity concentration difference in spring water at different areas can be due to multiple causes, such as differences in aquifer geology [48,49], regional tectonic and magmatic activities [35,[50][51][52] or physicochemical properties of water source [46,53]. Also the nature of the mines in the area might be a factor, REE mines tend to be surface mines, more easily influenced by erosion and weathering than the uranium mines, which tend to be deep mines.…”

“…In Vietnam, the method of soil gas radon measurement has been successfully applied in determining active faults in many regions such as Northwest region, Thac Ba, Son La and Song Tranh 2 hydropower plants and proposed locations of Ninh Thuan 1 and 2 nuclear power plants in Vietnam (Tran Van Duong & Tran Trong Hue, 1996;Tran Trong Hue, 1996, 1999Nguyen Van Pho & Nguyen Trong Yem, 1996;Nguyen Van Pho & Hoang Tuyet Nga, 1996;Nguyen Van Pho et al, 1999Pham Tich Xuan et al, 2017). Pham Tich Xuan et al (2017) proposed calculating the radon activity index (K Rn ) based on the ratio of anomaly value of Rn concentration to anomaly threshold value and inherited the classification of radon activity index from Seminsky & Demberel (2013) as mentioned above.…”
