Study on activated sludge flocs morphology and composition in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant in Poland

Abstract: This work is a comprehensive study of a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the city of Zgierz (Poland) aiming at the estimation of the impact of seasonal changes of temperature on flocs morphology, biomass concentration, quantity of filamentous bacteria, content of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and composition of microinvertebrates in the activated sludge system. Two short-term measurement campaigns, in winter and in summer, were carried out under dry weather conditions. It occurred that low… Show more

“…The high diversity of microorganisms and their simultaneous uneven distribution depends on wastewater flow rate, wastewater composition and dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, and pH. The experiments demonstrate that the maintenance of stable key parameters, including wastewater flow rate and biochemical oxygen demand, leads to the development of a particular composition within the activated sludge biocenosis, which is supported by multiple studies [25][26][27][28].…”

“…In the environment, the most widely spread LNAPLs are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) [13]. It is also probable that due to increasing mineral oil production and transport, the pollution of water, soil, and sediment by PAHs will continue to grow [10,18]. In the environment, PAHs are subject to volatilization, photo-oxidation, chemical oxidation, adsorption on soil particles, and leaching [3].…”

It is also likely that, as oil production and its transport increases, water, soil and sediment pollution will continue to increase [19,20]. In the environment, PAHs are subject to volatility, photo oxidation, chemical oxidation, and adsorption to soil particles [21].…”
