Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is one of the promising methods that can precisely predict non-uniform air flow and contaminant distribution in indoor environments. The overarching objective of this study was to develop a mathematical model for describing the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) reaction mechanism of gas phase toluene with titanium dioxide (TiO2)-bound indoor building materials. This mathematical model was developed based on Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetics and for the integration with CFD simulations as a wall surface boundary condition. The effects of gas phase toluene concentration, illuminance and humidity on the toluene oxidation reaction were considered with locally TiO2-doped building materials. Especially, humidity dependence was explicitly integrated as a competitive adsorption model between toluene and water vapour. Moreover, surface compositions of TiO2 and the substrate (ceramic tile in this study), and the physical adsorption properties of those materials, were modelled and integrated into the mathematical model. A 0.02 m3 chamber experiment and adsorption isotherm measurements were conducted to identify the model parameters. CFD analysis was carried out according to experimental scenarios, and an optimization procedure for the model parameters was proposed for their application as the boundary conditions in the CFD analysis.

Solar energy building applications are attracting increasing attention from researchers, engineers, businessmen and officials due to their significant benefits in sustainable development, such as energy saving, cost reduction and environmental protection. Trombe wall, as a classical passive solar heating technique, has been studied for many years. A variety of concepts, methodologies and experiences have been developed during relevant research. Especially in recent years, numerous studies on Trombe wall have been published, which implies a rising attention to this technique. This review focuses on the classification, experimental assessment, modeling methods, and evaluation metrics for Trombe wall. In detail, nine types of Trombe walls are introduced according to their materials, structures and functions. Four experimental methods and two modeling methods of Trombe wall are discussed based on their functions, advantages, disadvantages, and applicability. Three aspects of evaluation metrics for Trombe wall are summarized in terms of technique, economy and environment. Moreover, the current and future research of Trombe wall are discussed at the end. The authors consider this article would be useful for their peers and can facilitate the technical development of Trombe wall.

A simplified solar updraft device adapted from the Trombe wall concept was built to process large-scale airflow using only solar energy. The performances were systematically studied using experimental measurements and numerical models, with the focus of investigating whether this device can generate enough airflow under low solar intensities, and developing a fast-analytical mathematical model to effectively and efficiently find design rules for further application. The experimental results prove that the air mass flow rate generated by solar updraft in a 0.9 m 2 solar updraft device can be as high as 75.6 kg/h when the solar radiation is only 120 W/m 2 . A comparison of two numerical models shows that it is feasible to develop a fast-analytical tool based on widely available MATLAB with low demand for computing resources and to provide guidance on how a future device should be designed for particular applications. The study also investigated the effects of a wider range of solar radiation intensities, air channel height and thickness on the updraft performances (e.g., air temperature, airflow velocity, and mass flow rate).
