Study on 3D Point Clouds Accuracy of Elongated Object Reconstruction in Close Range – Comparison of Different Software

Abstract: Abstract. The image based point clouds generated from multiple different oriented photos enable 3D object reconstruction in a variety spectrum of close range applications. The paper presents the results of testing the accuracy the image based point clouds generated in disadvantageous conditions of digital photogrammetric data processing. The subject of the study was a long shaped object, i.e. the horizontal and rectilinear section of the railway track. DSLR Nikon D5100 camera, 16MP, equipped with the zoom lens… Show more

“…At the initial stage of research, many different configurations of multiple photos were tested (for example [ 16 ]) to get the best results of image-based point clouds generation in commonly used software systems, and only the best one is presented in this paper. The following selection criteria of the optimization were assumed: the smallest number of applied photos, deviation on control points, and the quality of generated point clouds for the 3D rail reconstruction.…”

“…The RealityCapture is quite a new application on the market, but it has enjoyed very good opinions among the users, and PhotoScan is a well-known and very popular suite. We tested them with some other application before [ 16 , 37 ] and after that we decided to use them for the verification of our measuring method. Both applications are dedicated, first of all, to reconstruction of 3D objects based on a large number of variously oriented digital images.…”

“…Another approach to the comparison considers the study of several datasets relative to objects of different complexity and scale, in which different significant parameters change, such as, mainly, the number of images and the cameras positions with respect to the scene (Remondino et al, 2014, Schöning et al, 2015. Additionally, Gabara et al (2017) focuses the attention on the reproduction of particular inconvenient conditions, such as: small, flat, elongated and horizontally oriented close range object; disadvantageous configuration of photos; control points located approximately on a plane; use of non-metric, mediumresolution digital single-lens reflex camera; difficult geometric and radiometric conditions of digital multi image matching. Lastly, some authors focus only on a specific output, i.e.…”
