Study of wire rope devices for improving the re-centering capability of base isolated buildings

Abstract: Wire rope devices have found numerous applications in the shock and vibration isolation of industrial machinery and equipment. The aim of the work is to present a preliminary investigation of their usefulness as a mean to increase the re-centering capability of the isolation system of a civil structure. In the first part of the study, analytical formulations have been developed to predict the restoring stiffness of wire rope devices depending on their material and geometrical properties, and the direction of l… Show more

“…Introduction Wire Rope Isolators (WRIs) are widely used in controlling both vibration and shock in order to protect sensitive equipment in the areas of aerospace and mechanical engineering [1] as well as for seismic protection of buildings [2] and their contents/equipment [3]. These devices have also been used to reduce the seismic vibration in protecting high voltage ceramic circuit breakers [4] and to protect the two Riace bronzes towards vertical components of seismic ground motions [5,6].…”

“…The WRI dissipates the input energy of the PI system primarily through dry friction between wire strands. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The stiffness-softening and damping characteristics of the WRI endow it with excellent isolation performance. Therefore, WRIs have been widely applied for practical isolation in the fields of aerospace engineering, building structures, and industrial production.…”

“…The WRI comprises stranded stainless steel in helical, spherical, or arch shapes, which are fixed to upper and lower clamps. The WRI dissipates the input energy of the PI system primarily through dry friction between wire strands 1–6 . The stiffness‐softening and damping characteristics of the WRI endow it with excellent isolation performance.…”

“…Yet, what is more commonly seen is a combination of sliding isolator and additional restraining device. Cables, including steel strands and steel wire ropes, are often used as additional seismic restrainers due to their high stability against chemical agents and extreme environmental factors . With the development of materials technology, in recent years, shape memory alloy (SMA) has been adopted to endow bridge with not only restraining but also significant self‐centering capability .…”
