Study of the reaction mechanism of incomplete fusion with the reactions40Ar+11B,12,13C at 7 MeV/amu

Abstract: Velocity spectra of evaporation residues produced in reactions with reverse kinematics have been measured inclusively and in coincidence with charged light particles. The results indicate that the residues due to incomplete-fusion reactions originate from cluster transfer reactions with distinct Q-values and with angular momenta in the entrance channel less than the critical angular momentum l~r for complete fusion. No significant dependence on the target structure is observed.

“…The results presented in section-3 clearly demonstrate the onset of ICF at the value of β ≈ 0.027 (F ICF ≈7 %) in 12 C+ 169 Tm system, and at the value of β ≈ 0.014 (F ICF ≈10 %) in 16 O+ 169 Tm system. In both cases, the observed value of F ICF is significant at well below the proposed onset β-value (i.e., 6 % of c) proposed by Morgenstern et al, [31][32][33]. A comparison of F ICF for 12 C+ 169 Tm and 16 O+ 169 Tm systems displays higher ICF probability for 16 O+ 169 Tm system for the entire measured energy range.…”

“…Following the Morgenstern's mass-asymmetry systematics [31][32][33], the values of F ICF obtained for 12 C, 16 O+ 169 Tm systems are plotted as a function of relative velocity (v rel → β) in Fig.5c. The energy axis is normalized to incorporate the Coulomb barriers of two systems, and to keep the same observable as has been used in most of the previous studies.…”

“…This suggests strong projectile energy dependence of ICF reactions. On the other hand, Morgenstern systematics [26,27] suggests that ICF contributes significantly above v rel ≥ 0.06 (6 % speed of light). However, in figure 3, the values of v rel are in the range from ≈ 2.7 % of c to ≈ 7.8 % of c for 12 C+ 175 Lu, and 12 C+ 169 Tm systems and from 2.3 % of c to 7.0 % of c for 13 C+ 169 Tm system.…”
