Study of the Microstructure, Tensile Properties and Hardness of AZ61 Magnesium Alloy Subjected to Severe Plastic Deformation

Abstract: Hot extruded (EX) AZ61 magnesium alloy was processed by the twist channel angular pressing (TCAP) method, which combines equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and twist extrusion (TE) processes and significantly improves the efficiency of the grain refinement process. Both the initial hot extruded AZ61 alloy and the alloy after completion of TCAP processing were examined by using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffrac… Show more

“…With increased demands for reducing structure weight as well as reducing energy consumption in aviation and automobile industries, magnesium (Mg) alloys are attracting increased attention due to their excellent properties such as lightweight and high specific strength [1][2][3][4]. While these structural components are achieved largely through using forming processes, study of Mg alloys thermal deformation behavior and microstructure evolution is a prerequisite for ensuring to produce high-performance workpieces of Mg alloys.…”

“…A modified ECAP called C-shape ECAP was developed to improve the hardness of AZ31 [20]. Another modified ECAP combining ECAP and twist extrusion was developed to improve the strength and elongation of magnesium alloys AZ61 [21]. Magnesium alloy AZ91 with high mechanical properties was processed by ECAP and subsequent low temperature rolling [22].…”
