Study of the mechanism of anti-ulcer effects of virgin coconut oil on gastric ulcer-induced rat model

Abstract: IntroductionThis study aims to evaluate the gastro-protective effects of virgin coconut oil (VCO) on different ulcer models as compared to the standard drug (omeprazole).Material and methodsThree groups of rats (6 rats per group for each ulcer model) were pre-treated with distilled water for the negative control group, 30 mg/kg of omeprazole for the positive control group and VCO (2 ml per rat) for the treatment group. Animals were pre-treated for 7 days and ulcers were induced with cold restraint stress, piro… Show more

“…The recent research is undertaken to explore the gastroprotective role of TQ when delivered through NLC dosage form. As the basic components of an NLC include solid and liquid lipids, we selected coconut oil as liquid lipid because of its potential gastroprotective effect for its antioxidant effect (42). Following the choice of liquid lipid, selection of the solid lipid was made based on TQ solubility as represented in Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, the blank NLC was found to inhibit the UI by 16.9%. Although this inhibitory effect is clinically insignificant, this action of the blank NLC could have the possible relationship with the antioxidant property of coconut oil, which could control the prostaglandin synthesis within the gastric parietal cells and thereby prevent damage of the gastric mucosa by the reactive oxygen species (42). NLCs play a key role in increasing TQ's solubility, as well as TQ's permeability to gastrointestinal tissues.…”

“…Like the free oxygen radicals, high levels of NO produced by oocytes or follicular somatic cells play an important role in oocyte maturation and physiology. High free oxygen radicals in the environment due to reduced NO levels can cause injury at the cellular level [30,31]. Calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) accelerate the structural changes in the inner mitochondrial membrane and increase the free oxygen radical levels, leading to dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain.…”
