Study of the effects of ECh power and pulse length on preionization in the KSTAR Tokamak

Abstract: In this paper, we present the results of a study of the preionization effects for the Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak (0 = 1 8 m, = 0 5 m, = 2 = 0 8 = 3 5 T, = 2 MA, pulse = 300 s) that is under construction by the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI). The preionization will be given by the Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) System with an 84-GHz 500-kW gyrotron tube being made by Communications and Power Industries. The ECH preionization effects are investigated by a 0-dimension… Show more

“…The TPC shot, #12400, is benchmarked with the 0D plasma evolution code, TECHP0D [16,17]. It has been found that the improved confinement of the ECH pre-ionization plasma due to the particle trapping in the mirror structure is essential to enhance the start-up performance of TPC over FNC even though its connection length is smaller [14].…”

“…In this research we would like apply the TPC scenario to KSTAR to demonstrate its efficiency and reliability in a conventional, superconducting tokamak. We will evaluate it with dedicated experiments and 0D start-up analysis, TECHP0D [16,17]. The article is organized as follows.…”
