In the process of dynamic Measurement While Drilling (MWD), the strong vibration and rapid rotation of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) lead to multi-frequency and high-amplitude noise interference in the attitude measurement signal. The weak original signal and extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are always the technical difficulties of dynamic MWD. To solve this problem, this paper uses the chaotic effect of the Duffing system, which takes the expression (−x3 + x5) as a nonlinear restoring force to detect the weak characteristic signal of downhole dynamic MWD. First of all, in order to meet the limit condition of the chaotic phase transition of the system output, the frequency value of the characteristic signal is reconstructed and transformed based on the variable scale theory. Then, in order to solve the influence of the initial phase of the characteristic signal on the detection accuracy, a detection model based on the array Duffing system is presented, and a frequency-detection scheme with all-phase coverage is given. Finally, another array Duffing system is designed for the parameter estimation of the characteristic signal. The critical value of chaotic phase transition is determined by adjusting the amplitude of the driving signal of the array Duffing system, and then the amplitude and phase parameters of the characteristic signal are synchronously estimated. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively extract the weak characteristic signal within the strong noise, and the SNR of the characteristic signal can be as low as −21 dB. Through the attitude calculation for the extracted characteristic signal, it can be seen that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of the inclination of the drilling tool significantly, which proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper.

Tungsten carbide inserts in rock drill bits are predominantly used in drilling rocks, particularly in mining industries. The research studies performed on drill bits have been limited to several factors such as collecting failure data of bit components from the field, conducting wear tests considering rock properties, and introducing new coated insert materials. The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for the betterment of tool wear with real-time data is limited. The present study has offered an evaluative perspective of an essential industrial issue. In this review, a concept map presents a visual organization and representation of knowledge obtained during the study. Utilizing the propositions from the concept map, a brief review of the integrated concepts of researchers relating drill bits, failure data, numerical and statistical models, wear analysis, reliability assessment, and prerequisites in developing new materials have been discussed in the backdrop of the present study.

One of the most crucial steps in producing dimension rocks is the rock cutting process, which incurs a high cost. The amperage draw of rock cutting machines is a major cost factor of this production process. Determining the effect of factors, such as the machine’s operating configurations, mechanical and physical characteristics of the rock, and type of cooling/lubricant fluid, on the cutting machine’s performance can significantly reduce operational costs. This study evaluates the electrical current consumption of a disc cutting machine during the cutting of hard rocks for producing dimension rocks under different operating conditions and using different fluids for cooling/lubrication. For this purpose, a number of cutting tests were performed under different operating conditions (cutting depths of 0.5, 0.7, 1, and 1.3 cm and feed rates of 45, 60, 75, and 90 cm/min) with five cooling/lubrication fluids, including tap water, soap water with a ratio of 1:40 and 1:20, and a commercial cutting power (Abtarash) with a ratio of 30:10 and 15:10. After examining the relationship between operating parameters and the amperage draw of the cutting machine in the presence of five fluids, several linear and nonlinear multivariate statistical models were developed to predict the amperage draw of the cutting machine. The developed models were evaluated using the t-test and F-test statistical methods. The results showed that using the developed models, the amperage draw of the cutting machine can be accurately predicted from the properties of the cooling/lubrication fluid, including viscosity and pH.
