“…The structural–functional groups found in the BC and HC materials included C=C, O–H, C–O, C=O, C–H, Si–O–Al, Si–O–Si, Si–O, N–H, C–OH, CH 2 and C–N. It is evident that some functional groups, such as C–H and C=O (between 1413 and 1462 cm −1 ) were shared by BC and HC materials 86 , C–O and O–H (1033 cm -1 ) 87 . For BC-based materials, some peaks appeared with increasing kaolinite, such as; Si–O–Si groups at 465 and 469 cm −1 88 , Si–O at 791 cm −1 89 and C–O, C–N at 1083 cm −1 90 , 91 .…”

“…To address this question, we first decided to test either purified or synthetic TMM molecules as substrates in the reaction. Purified TMM (pTMM) was prepared from our bacterial mycomembrane extract as described in the Materials and Methods section and synthetic TMM (sTMM) was obtained as previously described ( 20 ). Both preparations (see Supplementary Figure 1) of TMM are easily resuspended in aqueous solution and, as shown in Figure 1d, are readily used by MytC to mycoloylate PorA.…”

“…In biomass (BM), a broad band in the range of 3300-3800 cm −1 indicates the existence of O-H bonding [41], which persisted throughout hydrothermal carbonization and disappeared during pyrolysis. Additionally, BCs and HCs shared some functional groups, including C-H and C=O (between 1413 and 1462 cm −1 [42]. Some peaks were detected in BCs and HCs, such as Si-O-Si groups at 465 and 469 cm −1 , representing the presence of kaolinite [43].…”
