Study of the causes of runway incursions and related incidents

Abstract: The MITRE Corporation has been working with the FAA to analyze the causes of runway incursions and recommend potential solutions. Control of airport sugace operations is complex. Runway incursions usually occur because of multiple factors that combine to form a critical chain of events, culminating in an incident i f uninterrupted. Taken individually, these same factors may seem inrignificant. There is no single outstanding cause, and there is no single solution.
