Study of the autoantibody profile after the acute phase of Kawasaki disease in a cohort of children from North India

Abstract: A study of organ-specific and organ-nonspecific autoantibodies was carried out in 21 children being followed up after a diagnosis of Kawasaki disease at a tertiary care center of North India. Anti-nuclear antibodies were detected in 9.5% patients while anti-thyroid microsomal antibodies were detected in 23.9% patients. Other autoantibodies (e.g. anti-parietal cell antibody, anti-liver kidney microsomal antibody anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody, anti-mitochondrial antibody and anti-smooth muscle antibody) w… Show more

“…Moreover, our recent data have emphasised a possible link between KD and other autoimmune disorders, indicating a higher incidence of coeliac disease than in the general population [4] and strengthening past data on the concurrence of autoantibodies in both the acute and the convalescent phases of KD, such as aCL [10,11], ANCAs [10], ANAs, and antithyroid microsomal antibodies [12]. …”

“…This is associated with an increased release of cytokines, including interleukins (IL‐8, IL‐6 and tumour necrosis factor‐alpha [TNF‐α]) . Although KD is not considered to be an autoimmune disease, several autoantibodies have been demonstrated during the acute stage of KD that may persist during convalescence (Table ) . A few studies have also assessed these antibodies in patients with KD on short‐term follow up .…”

“…KD appears to be associated with immunological dysfunction as manifested by upregulation of the cytokine cascade in affected patients. In addition, several autoantibodies (organ specific as well as organ non‐specific) have also been closely associated with the pathogenesis of KD . However, the exact origin and pathogenic role of these antibodies in KD is poorly understood.…”

“…No relationship between immune findings and cardiac involvement could be identified. In another study, in 21 children with KD, ANA were detected in 9.5% while antithyroid microsomal antibodies were positive in 23.9% of patients 8 . Suziki, et al showed positive immunoreactions to vascular walls of coronary arteries in 16 of 48 patients with KD 9 .…”
