Study of the Application of Non-Plastic Clays from Poços De Caldas - MG

Abstract: The manufacture of ceramic products involves the knowledge of the whole process, starting with the raw materials that are traditionally treated as clays. The term clay according to Santos [1] means a material with earthy texture and low grain size, which develops plasticity when mixed with a limited amount of water. The clay (or mudstone from the geological point of view) is a finely divided rock, consisting mainly of clay minerals, plastic materials and minerals that may contain non-plastic, and some material… Show more

“…The values found were consistent with the literature showing higher densities for clays (0.9 to 1.7 g/cm³), lower for organic matter (0.9 to 1.3 g/cm³) and average when mixing both [23,24]. All samples showed a green density ≤1.6 g/cm 3 , indicating low plasticity [6,25]. After the first firing at 1000 ºC, all densities of the pieces increased, and the mixed formulations presented a significant difference compared to the pure samples.…”

“…On the other hand, the turfous clay presented higher loss on ignition (44.73%), showing higher volatility, and so, greater alterations in the final product are expected in relation to the reference sample. The peat material presented lower Al 2 O 3 content (26.77%), indicating material with reduced refractory properties compared to the reference sample [6,17]. In this context, the decrease of organic matter (OM) of this turfous raw material could be an alternative for this to present features close to the reference.…”

“…Para minimizar estes efeitos indesejáveis é necessário conhecimento das características das matérias-primas e suas combinações [3]. No entanto, nos últimos anos tem crescido o interesse pelo conhecimento mais aprofundado das características das argilas [4][5][6][7].…”

“…For Clay 1, the mineral composition is correlated with that of quartz clay, and hence, it is refractory due to the presence of a high amount of silica and a low percentage of loss on ignition (LOI) 33 . Another essential feature is the low occurrence of chromophore oxides such as iron and titanium (<1%), indicated by the white color of the clay after firing.…”
