“…Adsorption isotherm data.-Figures 11 and 12 show the adsorption isotherms of pyridine mono-HCl on two different sizes each of silicon dioxide ͑fumed silica, d mean ϳ 120 nm and d mean ϳ 1 m͒ and silicon nitride ͑d mean ϳ 50 nm and d mean ϳ 1000 nm͒ particles as a function of the additive concentration in the slurry. The work by Prasad and Ramanathan 15 and Kubota et al 32 on the adsorption of amino acids like glycine, histidine, lysine, and leucine on chemically modified silica suggests that, apart from electrostatic interactions, other types of interactions could be important in the adsorption of such amino acids. Similar to the adsorption of proline on the nitride 9,11 and of arginine and lysine HCl on both oxide and nitride, 15,16 the additives pyridine HCl, piperazine, imidazole, and benzotriazole also adsorb on both the oxide and nitride surfaces, but with striking differences.…”

“…Interactions of specific amino acid sequences within a protein are known to affect the overall adsorption process to a solid substrate. , For this reason, considerable efforts have been made to understand the adsorption properties of amino acids using various substrates and diagnostic tools. Studies using titanium oxide (TiO 2 ), , silica, , alumina, graphite, gold, , stainless steel, platinum, , and silver have consistently shown that the macroscopic adsorption behavior of various amino acids is intimately related to pH, concentration and charges on the amino acids, and the particular solid substrates used. In particular, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies combined with electrochemical techniques have produced valuable information regarding the structures and oxidation mechanisms of adsorbed amino acids at the platinum and gold electrodes. ,, FTIR spectra have shown that amino acids are adsorbed by 2-fold coordination via a carboxylate group (CO 2 - ) on the metal surface.…”

“…Each Raman spectrum was an average of at least 500 scans and was recorded at a spectral resolution of 4 cm 01 . Electrochemical reduction and oxidation of the particles was carried out in HCl solutions at pH 2.5 using the following sequence: 01 mA/cm 2 dine (free base form) was obtained from Sigma. Adsorption FIG.…”

“…To simplify the search for new materials, molecular recognition of amino acids is often used as a test for the selective binding properties of substrates. Some of the strategies employed have involved chemically modifying Ellipsometry was used to monitor the adsorption and desorpsilica surfaces (2) and the synthesis of artificial host mole-tion phenomena occurring in real time at the liquid/solid cules (3).…”
