Study of Sural Nerve Complex in Human Cadavers

Abstract: Aim. The sural nerve complex (SNC) consists of four named components: medial sural cutaneous nerve (MSCN), lateral sural cutaneous nerve (LSCN), peroneal communicating nerve (PCN), and sural nerve (SN). The formation and distribution of the sural nerve vary in different individuals. SN is universally recognized by surgeons as a site for harvesting an autologous nerve graft. The nerve is widely used for electrophysiological studies. Hence the study of sural nerve complex was taken up. Method. SNC was observed b… Show more

“…In the present study Type A Sural Nerve formation was more common. The present study is similar to the study done by William et al [10]., Heulke et al [11], Mestdagh et al [12], S R Seema et al [13]. According to Heulke et al [11] formation of SN was broadly classified into three types: Types A, B, and C.…”

“…Further, SN has a long length and minimal branching and is easy to harvest. In terms of these advantages, it is the most common graft source for peripheral nerve injuries that require nerve graft repair [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…The SN is one of the major nerves that transmits sensations to the posterior and lateral-distal portion of the leg, lateral side of the heel, and little toe [4][5]11]. It comprises a union of the lateral sural cutaneous nerve (LSCN) branch of the common fibular nerve and medial sural cutaneous nerve (MSCN) branch of the tibial nerve on the posterior side of the leg.…”

“…It continues all the way through the lateral aspect of the foot as the lateral dorsal cutaneous nerve (Vuksanovic-Bozaric et al, 2014). The anatomy of the SN as normally described is a combined origin from the medial sural cutaneous nerve (MSCN) and the peroneal communicating nerve (PCN), which arise from the tibial nerve (TN) and common peroneal nerve (CPN), respectively (Seema, 2013). However, this textbook anatomy is only seen just over 51% of cases (Ramakrishnan et al 2015).…”
