Study of Room Temperature Ionic Liquids as Gas Sensing Materials in Quartz Crystal Microbalances

Abstract: Twenty-eight quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors coated with different sensing films were tested and analyzed in this work; twenty-three sensors were coated in different room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and five additional QCM sensors were coated with conventional films commonly used as stationary phases in gas chromatography. Four volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in gaseous phase—hexanol, butyl acetate, 2-hexanone, and hexanoic acid—were measured. Two transducer mechanisms were used; resonant fr… Show more

“…The sensor response is fed back to the network through the RMS to DC converter block (TRMS) back to PLD [73]. We recently used four VNWAs simultaneously to investigate the response of QCM sensors coated with Room Temperature Ionic Liquid (RITL) for odorant sensing [74]. We also investigated the SNR improvement of the QCM measurement with VNWA [75], and the optimized sweeping parameters together with the curve-fitting technique followed by the Savitzky-Golay digital filter.…”

“…Recently, Aleixandre and Nakamoto [106] studied twenty-eight QCM sensors; twentythree of them were coated with ILs, and the remaining five were coated with common GC stationary phase materials. The authors measured both frequency shift and resistant shift of Mason equivalent circuit.…”

“…As a result of the gravimetric mechanism of operation [224], a multitude of coatings have also been explored for analyte specificity and multi-sensor array (MSA) development [225]. In a similar manner, multiple harmonic analyses may also lead to one sensor providing analyte specific responses to complex mixtures that result in production of a virtual sensor array (VSA) [226][227][228][229][230][231]. Thus, QCM has the potential to be a uniquely useful analytical tool for food quality analyses [232].…”
