Study of Resistance to Disturbances of the Main Types of Communication Systems on Board Military Ships Used during Interception or Search and Rescue Missions

Abstract: In addition to combat missions, military ships often participate in search-and-rescue missions or interception of ships with refugees or migrants. The communication systems and modes of work that may be used during these missions will be in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). This paper aims to demonstrate by theoretical methods (analytical and numerical) the noise stability of communication systems using analog modulation in high-noise conditions, characteristic… Show more

“…Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) was developed for emergencies predominantly in marine vessels. It provides an alert signal to search and rescue (SAR) authorities via satellite through a very high frequency (VHF) communication channel [1][2][3]. In [4], a low cost Cosmicheskaya Systyema Poiska Avariynyich Sudov-Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (COSPAS-SARSAT) transponder was developed.…”

“…The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) was also in effect at the port. It supplements the 1974/1988 Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention on basic security procedures for ships, ports, and government institutions (Solcanu et al, 2021). Every ship must disclose its state or condition before entering a port.…”

“…Level 2 is a high level for a specific period in which a security officer has identified security risk. Level 3 will include additional security measures for an upcoming or recent occurrence that must be kept up for a limited time (Solcanu et al, 2021). The security measure must be implemented even if no specific target has been identified.…”

“…In [30], [31], the authors used "Coordination Center East Thuringia: IT-Security in a Coordination Center" as a case study, demonstrated the critical impact of cybersecurity risks and attacks for emergency services. Solcanu et al [32] studied the effectiveness of using analog systems, such as amplitude (AM), frequency (FM), and phase (PM) modulations, in high-noise conditions in the marine environment for search and rescue missions. Their study aimed to evaluate whether the current emission classes are sufficiently resistant to disturbances or whether other technical solutions, such as the transition to digital communications, need to be adopted.…”
