Abstract:In this work, we are presenting the results of radium concentration, surface and mass radon exhalation rates for a number of 209 soil samples collected from different locations of Kassala town, Sudan, by using the can technique, containing CR-39. The values of radium concentrations from soil samples were found to be ranging from 3.9 to 34.2 Bq.kg -1 , with an average of 16.3 ± 1.6 Bq.kg -1 . The surface and mass exhalation rates of radon were found to be from 0.84 to 7.35 Bq.m -2 .h -1 and 17 to 148 mBq.kg -1 .h -1 , with an averages of 3.50 ± 0.35 Bq.m -2 .h -1 and 70 ± 7 mBq.kg -1 .h -1 , respectively for the studied soil samples. From the results of this study we found that, there was a good correlation between radium concentration and radon exhalation rates in soil samples. The values of radium concentration determined in soil samples are less than the permissible value of 370 Bq.kg -1 recommended by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Developments, which is acceptable for safe use. Thus, results reveal that the area is safe as far the health hazard effects are concerned. Finally we compare our results with similar findings in different regions of Sudan and among other Countries.

The goal of this work is to build up a national database for radon in houses, soil, and water and to demonstrate health risk due to radon inhalation and to construct radon map in the country in order to provide the scientific basic information for the establishment of radon national standard level. The radon predictive maps were built employing familiar GIS software (ArcView 3.2). The review outcomes highlight the characteristics and behaviour of radon in the environment as well as the importance of legislation making radon monitoring in the country is compulsory. If the outcome of this review is hoped that will increase regulation awareness and culture to deal with radon level in Sudan.

Radon is a natural radioactive gas used to estimate the radioactive hazard in the environment. Radon (222Rn), which is one of the daughters of uranium (238U), represents the most essential isotope, with a half-life of 3.825 days. The associated health risks due to inhalation and ingestion of radon and its progeny when present in enhanced levels in an indoor environment like a human dwelling have been documented. In this chapter, we have discussed the sources and techniques besides the methods used for measuring radon gas in the environment including soil, water, building materials, etc., which are well documented. A wide range of techniques for the detection and quantification of radon has been developed over the last few years. There is no single technique that can meet all the requirements of the different types of the radon measurements. Finally, we have mentioned the most essential information effecting the radon monitoring in the environment and the methods of measuring and controlling the concentration values throughout the environment; we have also mentioned the effect of radon on the inhabitants through the estimation of the effective dose rates and lung cancer risk due to radon gas when its values exceed the action level values.
