Study of neutrino interactions in hydrogen and deuterium: Description of the experiment and study of the reactionν+dμ+p+ps

Abstract: This paper gives a detailed description of an experiment which studies the interactions of muon-type neutrinos in hydrogen and deuterium. The experiment was performed at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the wide-band neutrino beam incident on the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium. The neutrino energy spectrum peaks at 0.5 GeV and has a tail extending to 6 GeV. The shape and intensity of the flux is determined using measurements of pion yields from beryllium. The produced pion… Show more

“…The first category, quasi-elastic (QE) CC events, is the primary source of untagged Michel electrons and originates from neutrinos in the energy range 150 Y250 MeV. The uncertainty on the cross section in this energy region is 25% (Barish et al 1977). These Michel electrons comprise 80% of the DSNB background.…”

“…The dashed, dot and dash-dotted lines show the calculated quasi-elastic, single-meson and deep-inelastic scatterings, respectively. The data points are taken from the following experiments: ( )ANL [54], ( )GGM77 [55], (•)GGM79(a) [56],(b) [57], ( * )Serpukhov [58], (♦)ANL82 [59], ( )BNL86 [60], ( )CCFR90 [61], ( )CDHSW87 [62], (×)IHEP-JINR96 [63], (+)IHEP-ITEP79 [64], ( )CCFRR84 [65], and ( )BNL82 [53].…”
