Study of nephrotoxic potential of acetaminophen in birds

Abstract: The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of acetaminophen on kidneys of birds by comparison with diclofenac that is used as positive control. The birds of Group I served as negative control and received normal saline, whereas Group II birds received diclofenac injection (2.5 mg/kg IM) and Group III birds received acetaminophen injection (10 mg/kg IM) for a period of seven days daily. The birds treated with diclofenac showed severe clinical signs of toxicity accompanied with high mortality and sign… Show more

“…Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is one of the most popular and widely used drugs for the treatment of pain and fever in humans [84]. Paracetamol has an analgesic effect in pigeons [85] without a demonstrated nephrotoxic potential, at least in chickens [86]. Paracetamol occupies a unique position among analgesic drugs, both for the type of pain relieved and the side effects.…”

“…La gran alternativa a estos AINEs es el meloxicam, ya que puede ser un buen antiinflamatorio en animales de producción que no afecta la función renal de los buitres (Cuthbert et al 2007;Swan et al 2006a;Markandya et al 2008;Cuthbert et al 2011).El paracetamol es un inhibidor de la COX que parece que no es nefrolesivo en gallináceas y podría ser una nueva vía de estudio (Jayakumar et al 2016). …”

“…The gastrointestinal, renal, and haematopoietic systems are all affected by the toxic effects of this class of medications. Nephrotoxicity is the most frequently reported NSAID side effect in birds (Jayakumar et al, 2010; Pereira & Werther, 2007; Zollinger et al, 2011). For instance, in some countries, the vulture population has decreased recently, due to NSAIDs such as diclofenac and flunixin, which cause kidney failure due to renal residues (Toutain et al, 2010; Zorrilla et al, 2015).…”
