Study of (α,p) and (α,n)

Abstract: A B S T R A C TA large number of α p ( , ) and α n ( , ) reactions are known to play a fundamental role in nuclear astrophysics. This work presents a novel technique to study these reactions with the active target system MUSIC whose segmented anode allows the investigation of a large energy range of the excitation function with a single beam energy. In order to verify the method, we performed direct measurements of the previously measured reactions 17 O α n ( , ) 20 Ne, 23 Na α p ( , ) 26 Mg, and 23 Na α n ( ,… Show more

“…MUSIC is an active-target gas-filled ionization chamber, where the gas serves as both target and detection material. The MUSIC detector has been used to measure excitation functions of heavy-ion fusion reactions [6,4] and to measure (α, p) and (α, n) reaction cross sections in inverse kinematics [5,7,8,9], involving stable and radioactive beams. For the (α, p) and (α, n) reactions, cross sections down to 1 mb have been measured.…”
